The Truth, the Whole Truth

“A fool is born every minute.”  Although the quote is attributed to P.T. Barnum, it was stated by other men years before Barnum.  No matter who said it first, the point is that gullible people are never hard to find.  “Where two or more are gathered, one is easily duped” (attributed to Nick Garland!).

Frequently, we read of a person being taken for a large sum of money by a shady person offering a “once in a lifetime” moment to gain wealth if the person will just give them their bank info so that the money can be deposited.   How many times have you made a purchase that appeared to be a great deal only to discover the product was useless?

Sadder still is the number of people that are so easily led into cults, false religions, and erroneous teachings because “it appears to be good”.  How many times are we warned to beware of that which seems to be right, but leads to every kind of evil and destruction?

Here are some good reminders to keep from being deceived…..

2 Peter 2:1 – But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

1 Timothy 4:1 – Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,

1 Timothy 6:20  – O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge.”

Matthew 15:14Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.

Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

I take God the Father to be my chief end and highest good.

I take God the Son to be my prince and Savior.

I take God the Holy Spirit to be my sanctifier, teacher, guide, and comforter.

I take the Word of God to be my rule in all my actions and the people of God to be my people under all conditions.

I do hereby dedicate and devote to the Lord all I am, all I have, and all I can do.

And this I do deliberately, freely, and forever.

–baptismal declaration written by Philip Henry, father of Matthew Henry
